Hello, I’m Mark. For more than 35 years, I’ve walked the path of ministry while nurturing my passion for art when time allowed. Prior to that I graduated from Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida, and became a full time painter and art instructor, teaching private oil painting lessons for adults and young adults in both group and individual settings. Now, I’m blessed to combine the callings of ministry and painting to help others discover their God-given creative gifts.

As the Carousel scrolls, you will see that your coach and instructor has experience in drawing and painting in genres that include realism, impressionism, and even abstract art. For teaching purposes, the gallery displays his ability in traditional as well as contemporary painting in oils, charcoal and pastels. Mark’s preferred subject matter is landscape in an impressionistic to realistic style. And he is gifted at helping you to develop in the direction of your own style and medium.

THERE IS A STORY…

Mark Hillis was born in Augusta, Georgia, but growing up his life was spent on the farm. His Grandfather was a farmer and his father owned and operated a General Merchandise country store that served the needs of the community. His life was formed around the influences of family, church, and the adventure that every day brought exploring woodlands, ponds, country roads and beautiful skies. His love for art was formed at an early age, as was his sense of the Hand of God upon his life.

Many years later, living in the Arizona Desert in Mesa, AZ, Mark is still living within the framework of those influences. After 40 years of marriage and almost that long in ministry, he is using his love for art as a new outlet for ministry. Check out the “My Story” page to find out more about what makes him tick! Q  “I haven’t painted in 20 years. Is it too late to start again?”

A: It’s never too late to return to your creative calling! Many of our students are returning to art after years or decades away. Like me, they often find that life experience and spiritual growth add deeper meaning to their art. God’s timing is perfect, and if you’re feeling drawn to create now, that’s no coincidence.

Q  “I’m completely new to oil painting. Is this program suitable for absolute beginners?”

A: Absolutely! Our program is designed to meet you exactly where you are. We start with the basics and progress at your comfort level, integrating faith and technical instruction in a way that makes learning both meaningful and manageable.

Q “How much time do I need to commit each week?”

A: Our program is flexible to fit your life. While we recommend setting aside 1-2 hours as many days per week as possible for optimal progress, but you can adjust this to your schedule. Some people must lump all of their painting into the weekend, keeping their easel set up and painting between other responsibilities. Obviously, the more you paint, the faster your progress will be, but if your time is constrained, paint at your own speed…your coach will adjust to your schedule.

Q “What supplies do I need to get started?”

A: You’ll need some basic oil painting supplies, but we help you start wisely and economically. Upon joining, you’ll receive our “Canvas & Crown” Supply Guide  that lists essential materials with options for various budgets. We believe in starting simply and adding materials as needed.

Q “I’m worried about the technical aspects of online learning. Is it complicated?”

A: We’ve designed our platform to be user-friendly, especially for those who might not be tech-savvy. Everything is clearly organized, and we provide simple instructions for accessing all features. Plus, our community is wonderfully supportive in helping each other navigate the technical aspects.

Q “How does faith integrate with the art instruction?”

A: Faith is woven naturally throughout our program. Most lessons have some aspect of Christian understanding woven into the instruction creating  opportunities to reflect on God’s creativity. We see art as a form of worship and teach technical skills while nurturing your spiritual connection to the creative process. Your coach, Mark Hillis, is gifted in relating many aspects of painting to Christian understanding of the Deeper Life. You will be encouraged, challenged and blessed! Q “What if I’m not ‘talented enough’?”

A: Remember that God is the source of all creativity, and He’s given each of us unique gifts to develop. Our program focuses on building skills step-by-step while celebrating your individual artistic voice. Technical ability grows with practice, and we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

Q “Can I interact with other Christian artists in the program?”

A: Yes! Our private community group provides a supportive space to share work, exchange encouragement, and connect with fellow believers on their artistic journey. We host regular critique opportunities, community challenges and offer members opportunity to upload and post their paintings for review and encouragement.

Q “What makes this different from other online art courses?”

A: Our program uniquely combines professional art instruction with spiritual growth and community support. We understand the journey of returning to art after a long break and provide both technical guidance and spiritual encouragement. Plus, our one-on-one coaching ensures personalized attention to your growth. One other unique aspect, as compared with many only programs, is that your instruction will allow you to grow in whatever subject matter or style you prefer…You will see as you look at Mark Hillis’ art on this page, that He like to experiment with different subject matter in different mediums. His favorite is landscape and most instruction will focus upon oils but you may use acrylics or some other medium and still benefit from this instruction.

Q “I have physical limitations that affect my painting. Can you accommodate this?”

A: Yes, we work with students to adapt techniques and find solutions that work for their specific situations. Our one-on-one coaching allows us to personalize instruction to your needs, and we can suggest modifications, tools, and approaches that make painting accessible and enjoyable even if we have to research and help find the right solution for you!
